Food from Farm & Forest: March 2016
Last month I announced a new monthly blog feature "Food From Farm & Forest" and I'm still wicked excited about it. It's just another thing that has shown me real progress towards our dreams since graduating from school. We keep track of our food produced or gathered each month. You can check out February's edition to learn more.
However I'm sad to say that this month is basically identical to the first. We produced some sprouts, maple syrup, and eggs. I also foraged for tons of wild onions so that total may be a bit up from last month. I loved using them and our eggs in my homemade egg drop soup recipe I came up with this month.
As for other springtime wild food it's really just started to come into it. We've been scouring the woods for morels with no luck. We did have a few ramps though and soon I'll be posting about growing ramps and how we're trying to re-populate our land with them. I will tell you that they'll be some really cool wild food featured on next month's post.
Also while we didn't produce as much food as I would've liked we did do a lot to begin producing more of our own food in the future! We spent a lot of time this month preparing the garden and seeding plants both indoors and out. In flats we have tons of tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, herbs, cauliflower, peppers, onions, leeks, and brussels sprouts. So far we have peas, onions, lettuce, pak choi, kale, swiss chard, beets, carrots, spinach, and radishes planted out in the garden/cold frame. On a non-garden note I also started growing our very own kombucha scoby (and it's totally working).
If you want to start producing your own food you can find out how to start seedlings here and check back for our upcoming posts on growing ramps and starting kombucha scobies.
