Book Review Series #4: The Egg and I
Since reading Little House on the Prairie as a child I have loved stories of self-sufficient homesteading women. This year when I read The Egg and I I fell in love all over again. Betty MacDonald tells the incredible story about how she journeyed to the mountains of the Northwest to renovate an old farm with her new husband and start a chicken farm.
Want a glimpse into what living like a pioneer or off the grid is like? Betty gives readers a real look at what the "good life" is all about. Hauling water, doing laundry by hand, caring for chickens without electricity or running water, and living miles from the nearest town.
Betty takes you along with her through all the adventures, sadness, and triumphs. She experiences run ins with mountain lions, forest fires, crazy neighbors, growing and preserving a large garden, and plowing with a draft horse. Betty has an entertaining writing stye with a touch of dry humor. Her beautiful story will make you think harder about any desires you may have to live like a pioneer.
This is not a how to book and doesn't offer a lot of instruction but I still believe it is a worthwhile read for any homesteader.
What's your favorite homesteading book?
